Bertling transports transformers for the Viking Link project

In April it was announced that the Viking Link Project, a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between the UK and Denmark, had been officially launched. Following a total investment of £1.8 billion, Viking Link is the first connection between the UK and Danish transmission systems.

According to National Grid, at over 760km, it is currently the world's longest land and subsea interconnector. It runs from the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire to the Revsing substation in Jutland and has a total capacity of 1.4GW.

We at Bertling Logistics are particularly proud to have contributed to the success of the project by delivering 7 x 225 tonne transformers from Rotterdam via the Port of Esbjerg to the project site in Vejen, Denmark. The accessories came from all over Europe and were also transported directly to the project site.

The transformers measured 7.50 x 4.64 x 5.00m and had to be assembled on site in front of the transformer bay before being jacked and skidded onto the foundation.

The Viking Link is expected to power 2.5 million homes in the UK while avoiding 600,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year - a prestigious project truly made for the future.
